Please read this email thoroughly so that you will be aware of the schedule adjustments happening this Monday.
We’ve been speaking with many of you to get your input and to hear your concerns. We’re making a few changes this week to simplify the schedule, to help with keeping track of coats and backpacks and to help parents engage with teachers around their child’s needs and progress.
Beginning Monday, November 8th all students will have an assigned hook or locker. These hooks are assigned by grade level and children will drop off their coats, boots, backpacks, and lunches before going to class or recess. On Monday morning your child’s grade-level teacher will show them their assigned hook or locker location. Please note that after this change, children will only need to carry their notebook, pencils and binders with them from class to class. (Please label your child's belongings, and be sure to check the Lost & Found for any missing items.)
We’ve also streamlined the class schedule, starting Monday. Students will still have their same classes, but in a different order than last week. This will make the schedule easier on students by bringing consistency though the week. Grade-level teachers will accompany 1st-5th grade students throughout the day. (7th and 8th grade schedules were distributed during Academy last week.) You can find the new K-6th Grade schedule at QRPS.org under News and Updates. Please look over the schedule to see what your child’s 1st period class will be.
We understand that change introduces uncertainty, so we will have grade-level teachers helping students find their first period class and moving with them throughout the day.
First period Class Assignments:
1st Grade Reading
2nd Grade Writing
3rd Grade Math
4th Grade Science
5th Grade Gym
6th Grade Band
Kindergartners will remain with their kindergarten teachers in their classrooms.
Some of the positive things that will come from the schedule change:
- Simplifies the schedule, making it easier for students, parents and teachers
- Brings consistency to the schedule from day to day
- Minimizes the transition times between classes, since the next class will be located closer, allowing for more in-class instruction time
- The location of student’s hooks and lockers will be on the way to lunch or recess
- Allows for more teacher preparation time
- Makes it possible for more supervision in the halls, at recess and at lunch
With the changes in the schedule, there have been some teacher reassignments. Ms. Hopkins will be joining our Kindergarten team and Mr. Leatherbarrow will be teaching Drama: Literature in Motion.
We’ve heard from you, our parents, that the mentor teacher model wasn’t working well for you, so we will be replacing it with the new Grade-Level Specialist model for 1st-5th grade. This improves continuity for your child during the day and provides more supervision in the hallways, at lunch, and during recess. You will have one teacher who sees your child in every classroom environment, who you will meet with in future Parent Teacher Conferences and who is very familiar with your child’s learning style.
Ms. Ashley Box will be our second grade teacher and Mr. Trent Larsen will be our fourth grade teacher. The 1st, 3rd and 5th Grade Specialist positions will be filled shortly, with our paraprofessionals filling in until the full-time teachers start later this week.
Unfortunately, these changes eliminated the need for three members of our faculty. This was a difficult decision that was made to better support the changes to the schedule and curriculum structure. We are sad to say goodbye to Ms. Jonas, Mrs. Bagley, and Mrs. Grogan and wish them the best in their future endeavors.
We recognize that there are a lot of new changes happening all at once. We want the parents to feel comfortable and informed. We are having a parent Q&A session on Sat, Nov 13 from 10 am to 12 pm. Please come and ask any questions you might have. You can also email questions ahead of time to questions@QRPS.org.
We are also excited to welcome Mindy McKnight to the Board of Trustees as the new Parent Representative. Thanks to all those parents that took the time to cast their vote. Mindy will focus on improving communication between the school and parents, developing teacher appreciation awareness and coordinating volunteers.
Thank you for your ongoing support and patience as Quail Run grows into the learning center we all envision. We love working with your students!

Our largest concerns exist in two areas: discipline and progress.
Discipline: I continually hear stories from my children and other parents in regards to the discipline issues that exist either on the way to school, or during school itself. I am sorry to say that my kids have experienced bullying first hand... and while we reported these issues to the school, we have seen no real effort by the school to resolve these issues. I am hoping some of the changes announced will allow for more control of students during recesses and class breaks, as it is desperately needed.
Progress: We have no way to know how are children are doing in school on a day-to-day basis. The lack of homework, and very poor parent/teacher communications (so far), cause us to fear that our students are falling behind educationally. This was made worse by the recent parent-teacher conference, where the teachers we met with could barely identify our student... let alone report on any real progress. If no homework is going to be sent home, there needs to be MUCH better and more frequent communication between the school and us as parent as per the status of our students.
Overall, to say that we are concerned as parents would be huge understatement. While we believe in the mission statement of the school, the management of the organization seems to be somewhat lacking. Just like any business, for it to succeed theirs needs to good design and execution. While the design and vision for the school seemed superb, the execution has (so far) missed the mark. We are going to give the current changes a chance… but if no real changes are made, we (like other parents) will be forced to remove our kids from Quail Run and re-enroll in our public school.
I know what you mean. I have had to call in many times about bullying and I'm sad to say it is still going on. I'm hoping with the new changes and the teachers staying with the class they will be able to keep a better eye on the children and take control of the class room. We will have to wait and see how it turns out but i'm hoping for the best.
We need to know our children's test scores, grades and attendance. Without this information, we are not part of the educational process. Please start sending this information home on a regular basis.
Thomas said my feelings very succinctly and eloquently! I pulled my daughter away from already established friendships fro her previous school year into Quail Run because I also believe in the mission statement. Also, as a Title 1 school, she was getting lost in the "No Child Left Behind" shuffle because she didn't have the struggles learning other students had. I loved the idea of the curriculum, but she has had an EXTREMELY difficult time at this school! Just when she gets used to a routine, you guys shift her around!! Contrary to popular belief (mainly because most adults refuse to tune-in to our kids) most children don't adjust to change easily, and she is one that has more difficulty than most, and I am sure she isn't the only one!! If the "Mentor" teacher is supposed to be in-tune with our child's needs, then why do some keep getting ignored?? If the teachers are as overwhelmed as they seem when I have volunteered, QUIT FIRING THEM!
I honestly want to stick it out, but I haven't had ONE positive experience with anything in that school, except Mrs. Jonas, and you let her go!
I am with Thomas-be open to swallowing your pride and being open to better ideas for the purpose of actually providing what you promised in the mission statement, because so far this school has fallen extremely short of the mark-or I will be forced to pull my children out. There are others who feel this way, and when it comes to our children, we need less frustration, and more signs of actual improvement on their behalf.
I am sad to hear that the bullying hasn't stopped for some of my daughters' friends-having the children sign a paper was a step-but if the parents of these children aren't also held accountable, nothing will change-behavior is taught, not inherent, in children. As professionals, you and your staff should do more so our children can know they're in a safe environment!
I am usually a very patient person, and I know I don't have any of the qualifications or education you and the board have. However, I am a mother, and will NOT stand by while mine and other children's emotional and other needs are ignored! I hope this latest (and hopefully last)change works, because most of us are tired of the "error and trial" this has all been.
